Introducing East Brother’s Mexican Lager
OUR STURDY GOLDEN BEAR
At East Brother Beer Co., we believe in hard work, community, and tradition—values that have always been part of both our brewery and our deep connection to Cal Athletics. Our ties to Cal go back to 1942, when the great-grandmother of one of our spouses first attended UC Berkeley. Since then, generations of our families have walked the campus, cheered for the Golden Bears, and shared in the same spirit of perseverance that defines both Cal Athletics and East Brother Beer.
Just like the athletes on the field, we put passion, grit, and determination into everything we do. Every batch of our beer reflects the same commitment to excellence. From our Bohemian Pilsner to our Gold IPA, we brew with the same values that have driven us from day one. Supporting Cal Athletics is a way for us to honor that legacy and continue to push forward with the same energy and drive.
There’s something special about college sports that brings people together—whether it’s the roar of the crowd at Memorial Stadium, the pre-game excitement at a tailgate, or simply sharing a cold one with friends. It’s more than just a game; it’s about camaraderie and community. Beers, Bears, Balls, Oh My! sums it up perfectly. It’s that electric feeling of being part of something bigger, where every play on the field, every cheer in the stands, and every sip of beer connects us all.
For us, this partnership with Cal Athletics is a way to be part of those unforgettable moments. Whether you’re at the stadium or watching the game at home, we want East Brother Beer to be there with you, adding to the excitement and bringing people together. It’s about more than just great beer—it’s about shared experiences and the pride we all feel for our teams.
So, next time you’re rooting for the Golden Bears, raise a glass with us. Let’s celebrate the hard work, the history, and the community that make college sports—and great beer—worth cheering for.
Cheers,
Rob Lightner & Chris Coomber

Spring in the Bay: Our Belgian Tripel's Place at Your Table
Spring around here brings a change in the air you can feel deep in your bones. It’s a time when the fog lifts just enough to let the sun through, and we all start thinking about those long afternoons that stretch into evenings with friends by the grill, on the dock, or just kicking back on the porch.
Crafted for the Season with a Nod to Tradition
Our Belgian Tripel is like that first warm breeze of March, promising good times ahead. But its roots go deeper, drawing inspiration from the centuries-old brewing traditions of Belgium, where monks perfected the art of crafting complex, flavorful beers. We brew it to capture the essence of what it means to enjoy a Northern California spring, blending tradition with our local flair. Its golden color and lively flavor pay homage to the brighter days, while the subtle spice kick harks back to those unexpected chilly nights Belgian brewers know all too well.
More Than Just a Beer: A Legacy in Each Sip
Here at East Brother Beer Co., we believe in the simple pleasures – good company, honest work, and a decent beer at the end of the day. Our Tripel is brewed with those values in mind, inspired by the hardworking people of Northern California and the pioneers of Belgian brewing. It’s about enhancing those moments spent together, sharing stories and laughs. It’s for those evenings when the sun’s setting and you’re not ready to head inside yet, those spontaneous gatherings that spring seems to encourage.
So, as the days start to stretch out and the promise of summer lingers on the horizon, we invite you to make our Belgian Tripel a part of your spring rituals. Let it accompany the first outdoor dinner of the season, the opening day on the bay, or just a quiet moment taking in the sunset after a long day.
Here’s to a spring filled with the best our corner of the world has to offer – and the perfect beer to toast it with.
East Brother Beer Co's Bo Pils Takes Home the Silver
In the bustling heart of Richmond, California, East Brother Beer Company stands as a testament to the timeless craft of brewing. Born from a shared passion for classic craft-style beer and a dedication to the hard-working heritage of their community, East Brother has become synonymous with quality, tradition, and a deep-rooted sense of belonging. At the core of their philosophy lies a commitment to never cutting corners, a pledge that is vividly reflected in every beer they produce. Among these, the Bo Pils shines brightly, a beacon of excellence recently awarded the Silver Medal at the Brewers Cup of California, an accolade that celebrates not just the beer itself but the brewers who brought it to life.
East Brother's approach to brewing is an homage to the traditions that have shaped beer-making for centuries. The Bo Pils, with its crisp, clean taste and deep historical roots in the Czech Pilsner style, is a perfect example of this reverence for the past. This beer is crafted with meticulous attention to detail and a profound respect for the processes and techniques that define the art of brewing. The recent recognition at the Brewers Cup is a nod to East Brother Beer Co’s steadfast commitment to these traditions, ensuring that every sip of Bo Pils offers a taste of history.
Behind every batch of Bo Pils is a team driven by passion. Co-founders Chris Coomber, Rob Lightner, and Brewmaster Paul Liszewski and his team pour their hearts into the brewery. This Silver Medal is a testament to their dedication, a symbol of the countless hours and unwavering pursuit of quality that goes into every beer they produce. For them, brewing is not just a business; it's a calling, a way to express their love for beer and share it with the world.
This commitment to excellence is underpinned by the labor of love that goes into crafting the Bo Pils. Winning the Silver Medal at the Brewers Cup of California is a recognition of the meticulous attention to detail, the precision of the brewing process, and the refusal to compromise on quality. It's a labor born from a belief that great beer is crafted from more than just ingredients—it's made with dedication, expertise, and a relentless commitment to crafting something truly exceptional.
As East Brother Beer Company celebrates this prestigious accolade, it serves as a reminder of the values that define their craft. The Bo Pils is more than just a beer; it's a celebration of the craftsmanship that goes into every sip, the traditions that have shaped brewing over centuries, and the community that gathers to enjoy it. In Richmond, among the clinking glasses and proud smiles of those who have made it all possible, the Bo Pils stands as a testament to what it means to brew with heart and soul. Cheers to East Brother Beer Co., to their dedication to excellence, and to the enduring legacy of crafting beer with passion, tradition, and an unwavering commitment to the craft.
The Fiery Tradition of Bierstacheln: A Toast to East Brother Beer Co.'s Heritage
East Brother Beer Co. continues to embody a legacy of craftsmanship and community in the heart of Richmond, California. As we approach our anniversary on February 18th, we're excited to introduce a unique beer serving technique that resonates with our commitment to tradition and quality – Bierstacheln.
Bierstacheln (pronounced “beer shta-hll”), or "beer spiking," is a centuries-old German tradition with roots that trace back to a time when beer was as much a staple of life as bread. In those days, the warmth of a brew was not just about comfort but necessity, offering solace against the cold. The practice likely started with blacksmiths and metalworkers, who, after a long day by the forge, would plunge their hot pokers into their beer to raise its temperature.
The Art of the Spike
The process involves heating a metal rod to a glowing red and then plunging it into a glass of beer. This creates a warm, frothy top and caramelizes the sugars in the beer, enhancing its rich, toasty flavors.
Darker, maltier beers with higher sugar content, like bocks and porters, are prime candidates for spiking. These styles respond beautifully to the heat, their complex flavors intensified and their sweetness brought to the forefront, offering a sensory experience unlike any other.
The Science Behind the Heat
At its core, Bierstacheln is a dance of temperature and chemistry. When the hot poker touches the beer, it causes an immediate and localized boiling effect. This not only warms the beer but also induces Maillard reactions—those same chemical reactions responsible for the browning of toasted bread and seared steak. These reactions create new flavor compounds, enhancing the beer's aroma and taste with notes of toffee, caramel, and even subtle hints of chocolate.
Our anniversary celebration is the perfect opportunity to experience this fascinating technique. Imagine holding a glass of your favorite East Brother beer, watching as a red-hot rod is submerged into it, witnessing the caramelization process, and then enjoying the transformed flavors.
We invite you to join us at our taproom on February 18th to experience Bierstacheln for yourself. It's an opportunity to step back in time and savor beer in a way that's rare and extraordinary. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the East Brother family, this experience is sure to deepen your appreciation for craft beer.
Join us at the East Brother Beer Co. Taproom on February 18th – experience the unique Bierstacheln technique and be part of our living legacy. 🍺🔥

New Year, New Brews: Savor the Flavor Without the Guilt
Happy New Year, health enthusiasts! As you jot down your resolutions and swear by salads and smoothies, let's not forget the joys of a good beer. But wait, beer and being health-conscious? Absolutely! At East Brother Beer Co., we believe in the art of balance – enjoying life's pleasures while staying true to your wellness goals. So, let's dive into how our Bo Pils, Blonde Ale, and Red Lager can be part of your healthier lifestyle this year.
1. Bo Pils: Light, Crisp, and Refreshing
First up is our Bohemian Pilsner, or as we lovingly call it, Bo Pils. This golden delight is a nod to the classic Czech Pilsner – crisp, clean, with a subtle hint of hops. But here's the kicker: it's surprisingly light on calories! With an ABV (alcohol by volume) of just 5%, it's a perfect choice for those who want to enjoy a beer without overindulging. The Bo Pils is like that friend who always knows how to have a good time but never gets too wild – reliable and always a pleasure to hang out with.
2. Blonde Ale: The Balanced Beauty
Our Blonde Ale is the middle child of our beer family – perfectly balanced and often underrated. It's a harmonious blend of mild malt sweetness and gentle hop bitterness, resulting in a light and easy-drinking ale. With an ABV of 4.2%, it's the go-to beer for those afternoons when you want to unwind without undoing your fitness efforts. Think of our Blonde Ale as the zen master of beers – it knows the secret to keeping everything in equilibrium.
3. Red Lager: Rich Flavor, Not Rich in Calories
Last but certainly not least, let's talk about our Red Lager. This beer is for those who love a bit more body and flavor. It boasts a rich, malty character with a smooth finish, all while keeping the calorie count in check. With an ABV of 4.6%, our Red Lager proves that you can have depth and complexity in your beer without a side of guilt. It's like that indulgent dessert that's surprisingly low in sugar – a pleasant surprise at every sip.
A Toast to Healthier Choices
At East Brother Beer Co., we understand the importance of making healthier choices, especially as the New Year rolls in. Our range of beers, including the Bo Pils, Blonde Ale, and Red Lager, are crafted keeping in mind both flavor and wellbeing. We believe in a world where you can stick to your resolutions and still raise a glass of great beer.
So, here's to a year of health, happiness, and high-quality beer! Remember, being health-conscious doesn't mean you have to give up on the finer things in life. It's all about choosing wisely and enjoying in moderation. Cheers to a balanced and flavorful 2024!
East Brother Beer Co's Russian Imperial Stout: A Timeless Tale of Taste
In the world of craft beer, few styles boast a story as rich and intriguing as the Russian Imperial Stout. Born in 18th-century England, this robust brew was designed to endure the long journey to Russia. Its creation is attributed to London's Anchor Brewery under Henry Thrale, who ingeniously increased its alcohol content and bitterness to prevent spoilage en route to the Russian court.
A Stout That Conquered an Empire
Although Peter the Great's visit to London in 1698 sparked Russian interest in British beer, it was Catherine the Great's patronage that cemented the Russian Imperial Stout's legacy. It wasn't just another beer; it was a brew that crossed borders and survived voyages, becoming a symbol of resilience and flavor.
The Anchor Brewery's creation wasn't initially dubbed 'Russian Imperial Stout'; that name emerged much later. In fact, the term 'Imperial' was used generally for stronger beers since the early 18th Century. The full phrase 'Russian Imperial Stout' only gained prominence in the 1970s, long after it had captured the hearts of Russian royalty. Despite its ties to Russia, the style was uniquely British, with Russian and Baltic brewers unable to replicate it due to differences in water profiles.
The Russian Imperial Stout's journey through time is as complex as its flavor profile. By World War I, this stout had nearly vanished from its birthplace, with only a few Baltic and Scandinavian breweries keeping the flame alive. The original Russian Imperial Stout saw its production in the UK cease in 1993, marking the end of an era.
Resurgence in the American Craft Beer Scene
However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Russian Imperial Stout found a new home and renewed fame in the American craft beer scene of the 1980s. U.S. breweries, known for their penchant for reinvention and experimentation, embraced this historic style. They infused it with a distinctly American bravado, leading to a plethora of variations. From Imperial Milk Stouts to Coffee Stouts, American brewers played with the recipe, introducing bold, innovative twists that redefined the style.
At East Brother Beer Co, our Russian Imperial Stout stands as a testament to this storied past. As part of our Freighter Series, it represents our commitment to crafting beers that not only echo the boldness of the freighter ships but also resonate with the rich heritage of brewing. Our seasonal Ale is more than just a beverage; it's a journey through brewing history. We've taken a classic, revered style and infused it with our passion for quality and innovation. The result? A stout that's not just a drink but a narrative of resilience, a celebration of craft, and a homage to the art of brewing.
In every sip of East Brother Beer Co's Russian Imperial Stout, you taste centuries of history, a legacy of innovation, and a commitment to excellence. Here's to a beer that's as deep and enduring as the history it carries. Cheers to a stout that's not just made, but crafted with a story to tell.
Celebrating Tradition: Dive into the Season with East Brother Beer Co's Festbier
Autumn winds are around the corner, signaling the festive season and, more importantly, the time for a cherished Bavarian tradition - Oktoberfest! While we can't all make the trip to Munich every year, the Bay Area Oktoberfest enthusiasts have a reason to cheer. We're delighted to announce the return of our much-celebrated and award-winning Festbier right here at East Brother Beer Co. Enjoy it at the taproom starting August 18th.
A Nostalgic Sip from History
For those uninitiated, the Festbier style originates from the Oktoberfest traditions of Munich, Germany. Historically, these were stronger lagers brewed in March (Märzen) and left to ferment over the summer, only to be relished during the fall festivities. As time evolved, while the Märzen style remained, a lighter yet equally flavorsome version, known as Festbier, emerged as a favorite for Oktoberfest celebrations.
What's unique about Festbier is its immaculate balance. It brings together a light amber hue, a malt-forward profile, and just the right hop bitterness to give beer enthusiasts an unforgettable drink.
East Brother’s Spin on a Classic
At East Brother Beer Co., our commitment has always been towards brewing classic, easy-drinking beers. The Festbier is no exception. Crafted with an unwavering dedication to quality, it's a heartfelt nod to Bavarian traditions, blending seamlessly with our ethos of staying true to the basics and doing them exceptionally well.
